A very personal poem about God and me. This was written at 30,000 feet and I am pleased to report the plane landed safely...

Oh My God !

Oh my God !
Who do you think you are ?
A question I can no longer avoid,
now I've got this far.

As I sit here writing this,
flying in the air,
I am supposed to be nearer to thee,
but are you even there ?

You see, I have tried so hard
and God, I've really tried,
but I stopped believing in you,
the day that my Father died.

I went to church every Sunday,
even after my paper round,
but that didn't stop him
being six feet underground.

There are so many different religions,
with supposedly one God, one love.
Do I sense some conflict
in the heavenly skies above ?

And then there was the Holocaust
and the so called Holy Crusade.
Isn't your technicolour dream coat
looking a little frayed ?

And how do you let the children die ?
With their big hungry eyes,
their stomachs all painfully swollen
and covered in swarming flies.

Now I can't blame you
for everything that's not quite right,
but you are the Almighty creator,
how about using some of that might ?

Now my kids go to Catholic schools
and I'm teaching them the Wholly Spirit:
"Look after the World and its people,
live your life and be in it !"

Now as I read back these lines,
I can hear my old priest say:
"Some things you will never understand,
God works in a mysterious way".

But I'm going to take the atheist stance
and not have a "bob each way",
I guess you can't live to regret that decision,
not even on judgement day.
