A Dad's Lad
 
You see, you were ya Dad's Lad,
Could never have been denied,
We were riding together,
Lifelong partners, side by side.
 
You were so beautiful,
With your boyish good look charms,
I couldn't face you were dying,
As I held you in my arms.
 
But maps in life sometimes don't,
Always work out quite to plan,
And certain things won't be beat,
Despite the medicine man.
 
There can be no stronger love,
Than the one I feel for you,
And I suffered, felt the pain,
Of what you were going through.
 
You see, you were ya Dad's Lad,
Could never have been denied,
We were riding together,
Lifelong partners, side by side.
 
And as it got near the end,
Your spirit started to wane,
And you sweated profusely,
And I thought it was the pain.
 
But nurse looked me in the eye,
And said, her heart open wide,
"He wants you to let him know,
It's right to go for the ride".
 
Now that was the hardest speech,
The words got stuck in my head,
But they painfully came out,
As very quietly I said;
 
"You've made me so happy,
It's felt good to be alive,
But it's time for you to leave,
Let me know when you arrive".

Now today is your birthday,
It's three long years since you've gone,
And the pain of missing you,
Is alive and still so strong.
 
I've never felt so alone,
Now I've lost you and the wife,
Considered not going on,
Considered taking my life.

Lifelong partners, side by side.
 
But I stared at your photo,
And it fell straight to the ground,
Then I knew you'd never left,
And was still riding around.
