Shining Star - A poem
from a proud mother to her achieving daughter.
(The first of two poems from a mother to
her daughter and son. The son's poem
can be found here).
(Julie has asked me to keep the details of
the request confidential - which I have :)
Shining Star
Sometimes things in life,
don't always work out as planned,
hard to find the rhyme or reason,
sometimes it's hard to understand.
And life isn't a bowl of cherries,
sometimes there's nuts along the
way,
but the day I gave birth to you,
Allyson,
well, that was my very proudest
day.
You've simply been an
constellation,
and I'm so utterly proud of you,
I'm proud of exactly who you are,
and I'm very proud of what you do.
Allyson, I think you're a very
special young woman,
you've been a joy to have as a
daughter,
you've so many talents and skills,
and I'm your number one supporter.
Now I know that you're a "clean
freak",
worse than me and that says it all,
but whenever I think of you,
I feel about ten feet tall.
Generally, I don't like to give
advice,
because at times its been known to
rock the boat,
but please remember to keep the lid
down,
because kittens (unlike floaties)
don't float !
Now your father was a good man,
but we were just too young I guess,
still no regrets from my past,
because you've turned out as one of
the best.
But life has a way of working out,
or at least that's the way it
seems,
because now I've been married to
Tim,
and he is the husband (and step
father) of my dreams.
The truly amazing piece of this
tale,
and still today, I'm truly amazed,
that all the way through high
school,
you kept on getting straight A's.
Now you're teaching K-six and
special ed,
sharing your skills with those most
in need,
you've always put others before
yourself,
and this is just another selfless
deed.
You maintain your own apartment,
despite having all this on your
plate,
and before these lines come to an
end,
there's one other thing that I'd
like to state.
You see, I've never had to raise my
voice to you,
Allyson, you've simply been a joy
to raise,
and the days that we've spent
together,
well, they've been my happiest of
days.
You have always worked so very
hard,
you've always been such a trier,
and they say: "What goes around,
comes around",
so I believe you've earned your
heart's desire.
With you I've achieved heaven on
earth,
and there's not many people who can
say just that,
just know that I'm very proud of
you,
but of course, that's a matter of
fact.
I'm proud that you made the dean's
list,
and that you've managed to buy your
car,
and I love you more than the moon
and the sky.
Indeed, you are my one and only
shining star.

Julie kindly replied:
Hi Allen, Your poem is a
wonderful tribute to my daughter, it is so touching. I think the only change
I will have you make is to take the two paragraphs about Tyler's and Nick's
dads out (Ed: omitted) . I know that they were a part of her life but now
that I see them on paper I just don't think they need to be there. Other
than that I think you did a wonderful job on this poem and I know there will
be some tears shed when we read it together. Thank you so much for capturing
how I feel about my Shining Star. I don't mind if you publish this poem and
you don't have to change the names. I want to pick the single rose (what
else) as the paper it is printed on. If you don't mind I would like the poem
autographed and I would like the original draft. Thanks so much again Allen,
this sure is a treasure to have and needless to say I will be ordering
again. Could you please let me know what the total is on this package?
Thanks so much, Julie Mooso
P.S. When you send my
package please send lots of extra cards, I would like to pass them out to my
co-workers.
I work at Wyeth Ayerst
Labs (which makes Advil) which is a very big facility and I showed your poem
around today and had a lot of people ask for your card so I hope you send me
some. Thanks again Allen and I will be in touch again. Julie Mooso
Hi Allen, Just
wonderful, what else can I say? Thanks again so much for your wonderful
talent and I will be in touch after I think for a while on
Nick's poem, I will have to
be very careful with that one. You told me that I get the economy package
free, can I pay the extra $20 and upgrade that to the same package as this
poem? (Ed: Yes, well at least to the Unique :) Let me know and I guess this
one is a wrap. Thanks so much Allen, Julie
