Early 1997 I booked Michael (my eldest son) into cricket camp for a couple of days. This meant that one Sunday morning, after dropping him at Cranbrook School in Bellevue Hill, Sydney, I had nothing to do for six hours until it was time to pick him up.

I ended up walking to my Mascot office, a round trip of twenty five kilometres.

These are some of the scattered thoughts that came to me that day as I walked through suburban Sydney.

Sydney Suburbs

I've just dropped you off,
And am walking through The Bay,
I wonder if people will ever,
Pay to see you play ?

Now I'm alone,
With time on my hand,
I'm going to let it trickle,
Like bottled grains of sand.

I'm walking in the rain,
Washing away the years,
Hey, how come ?
God doesn't have salty tears ?

I'm finally off the drugs,
It feels good to be alive,
Losing weight everyday,
And looking thirty five !

As I walk through the empty streets,
On this warm and rainy dawning,
Sydney's Sunday wakes up slowly,
Coffee brewing, fathers yawning.

I see a girl jogging,
With her bodyguard by her side,
Why is she running scared ?
Is there something to hide ?

There's a notice that says Danger,
The pond has blue green,
It's just another sign,
I wish I'd never seen.

Because the suburbs are quite nice,
And I don't mean to sound too bitter,
But I just couldn't live with,
the graffiti, the traffic and the litter.
